Baselworld 2018: Rolex GMT Master II ‘Pepsi’ Oystersteel; all that and so much more

by Hours and Minutes Australia

What do you get when you combine Rolex’s signature Oyster case, Jubilee bracelet and innovative two-colour Cerachrom insert in red and blue ceramic as well as one of the brand’s timeless horological icons? New at Baselworld 2018, the Rolex GMT-Master II ‘Pepsi’ Oystersteel has all that and so much more.

Performance Perfected

The new GMT-Master II is fitted with Rolex’s new, exceptionally high performance in-house calibre 3285 automatic movement. Boasting a 70-hour power reserve, a whole 22 hours longer than the calibre housed within the earlier version of the GMT-Master II, the 3285 calibre features Rolex’s patented Chronergy escapement which increases the efficiency of the
movement. Crafted from nickel-phosphorus, the 3285 calibre is also resistant to magnetic interference.

Perfect for the modern-day traveler, who is unwilling to compromise on their personal style for something as trivial as telling the time in two places at once, the GMT-Master II allows a reading of the time in two time-zones simultaneously.

Combining Colours

The 40mm Oyster case is Oystersteel and the dial is a striking black laquer with Rolex’s characteristic cyclops window at 3 o’clock on the scratch-proof sapphire for improved legibility. The rotatable bezel is bi-directional and has a two-coloured 24-hour ceramic insert in a bold red and blue. The patented Jubilee bracelet is also made from Oystersteel.

The new GMT-Master II comes in two more exceptional variations, one in Rolex’s exclusive 18K Everose pink gold and the other in a classic combination of Oystersteel and 18K Everose gold. Both these warm toned models have a bi-directional rotatable bezel with the same two-coloured Cerchom insert at the all-Oystersteel version. The bezel has a combination of black ceramic and a newly crafted brown ceramic and the hands are cast in 18K pink gold. The Everose gold and Everose gold and Oystersteel GMT-Master II are fitted with a three-piece Rolex Oyster bracelet.

After much speculation and guesswork about the novelties that Rolex will unveil at Baselworld 2018 this week, the GMT-Master II in all its new avatars is one that is definitely worth the wait!
