INTRODUCING: Blancpain Desert-Coloured Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date

by Hours and Minutes Australia

With imposing silhouettes, vintage inspirations and sharp contrasts, Blancpain ‘s new desert-coloured Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date watch is truly one of a kind. The Fifty Fathoms collection embodies Blancpain’s passion for the marine world, introduced for the first time in 1953 with the creation of the first modern diver’s watch. Ever since, the brand has worked alongside divers, scientists and underwater photographers in their exploration and discovery of the awe-inspiring beauty of the oceans, contributing in this way to the revelations of this fascinating world and the motivation to protect it.

Limited to 500 pieces, this new reference, evokes the desert, and more specifically Death Valley in the United States, where Ernest H. Brooks II, pioneer of underwater photography and contributor to the Edition Fifty Fathoms project, made a spectacular dive in 1962. The palette, which creates such visual harmony that it becomes undeniably soothing to look at, is realised primarily through the unique gradient-coloured sandy beige dial. The dial that forms the perfect canvas for the boldly sized rectangular hour-markers that guarantee instant readability of the information displayed. A chapter ring punctuated with Arabic numerals marks the five-minute intervals while evoking the inner rotating ring of the 1970s watch. Just as on the period timepiece, the date and day of the week windows are located at 3 o’clock. The hands are coated with Super-LumiNova® and feature the same baton-shaped design as earlier Bathyscaphe models.

With satin-brushed surfaces, the case of the Desert-Coloured Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date is sized at a good 43mm, and stands at a thickness of 14.25mm. Blending beautifully with the desert coloured dial is a unidirectional rotating bezel with a brown ceramic insert and Liquidmetal® hour-markers.

Inside the stunning and resilient watch—water resistant to approx. 300m—is a Blancpain manufactured movement, the calibre 1315DD, which can run for up to 120 hours (5 days) when fully wound. Another major asset is its balance fitted with a silicon balance-spring, a guarantee of accuracy and resistance to magnetic fields. The sapphire crystal caseback of the watch the wearer to admire the finishes of this top-of-the-range movement, including its gold oscillating weight coated with a NAC treatment, thereby endowing it with added character.

Worn on a sandy-coloured sail canvas strap matching the warm tones of the dial, the new Blancpain Desert-Coloured Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date is priced at CHF 11,900.
