Following the launch of the Carrera Heuer 160 Years Silver and Montreal Editions, TAG Heuer presents four new Carrera Sport Chronograph timepieces, to mark the 160th Anniversary of the Legendary Carrera.
The first Carrera timepiece drew its name and inspiration from the iconic Mexican Race – Carrera PanAmericana – which was at the time one of the most treacherous road races in the world. The word “carrera”, which in Spanish means road, race, career and course, caught then-CEO Jack Heuer’s attention and he knew immediately that it would be a perfect name for a new timepiece. In 1962, Heuer registered exclusive rights for the use of the name under “Heuer Carrera” and in 1963 the first quintessential driver’s watch (Heuer Carrera Chronograph) was born.
With a 44mm case and water resistance of 100m, the collection comprises four finely brushed and polished steel models. The prospective buyer is spoilt with an attractive choice of dial colours – deep blue with a matching ceramic bezel, muted olive green with a silver steel bezel or two black versions with a sleek black ceramic bezel. Despite the different hues, you’ll find the design is not jarring to the eyes and that there’s a level of subtlety which is simply breathtaking. The improved integration of the glass and slight bevel also enhance its aesthetics.
The dial of the new TAG Heuer Carrera has a circular brushed finish. It supports a chronograph feature with three small sub-dials at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock and a date display window at 6 o clock. The 9 o’clock hour counter now has the numerals 12, 4 and 8, offering a visual balance to the minute counter at 3 o’clock. Offering a nice contrast to the dial are the hour and minute hands and indexes which are rhodium plated or 18K 5N rose gold plated (Black and rose gold Version) with white Super- LumiNova. The watches are fitted with a new “H- shaped” bracelet which is thinner, lighter and more ergonomic.
The stand-out piece from these sporty new models is the black and rose gold TAG Heuer Carrera. The black ceramic bezel is filled with rose-gold-coloured lacquer – a first for the luxury watchmaker – and the crown and pushers are made from solid 18K rose gold. The oscillating weight of the movement, visible through the sapphire crystal case back, is fashioned from black PVD coated brass with a rose gold printing. This timepiece wraps around the wrist with a classic black leather strap.
Inside is the in-house Heuer 02 movement which boasts an impressive 80 hours of power reserve. The movement comprises 168 components, including a column wheel and a vertical clutch – signatures of improved chronograph timekeeping and high-quality manufacture movements.
