For his latest collaboration with Hublot, the unquestionable master of metals, Lapo Elkann, founder and artistic director of Italia Independent and Garage Italia, seeks to bring his sailing memories, and the legacy of his grandfather’s award-winning yachts back to life. The Hublot Big Bang Unico Teak Italia Independent is a truly unique timepiece with a bezel that is crafted from real teak-wood.
Limited to 100 pieces, the Unico Teak comes with two straps, easily interchangeable thanks to Hublot’s patented One-Click technology. One is cut from the Kevlar carbon of an actual boat sail and lined with rubber while the second rubber strap is orange and decorated with stripes.
Below The Deck
The 45mm case of the Big Bang Unico Teak is crafted from King Gold, a special alloy developed by Hublot which combines gold and platinum to radiate a striking reddish sheen. The connection to sailing continues as the use of gold is a tip of the hat to one of Lapo Elkann’s grandfather’s yachts, the Tiketitoo which had a warm golden-coloured hull.
Powered by Hublot’s in-house caliber UNICO HUB1242 chronograph movement, the Big Bang Unico Teak has a 72-hour power reserve and, like any seaworthy timepiece, is water resistant up to 100m.
The Big Bang Unico Teak is accompanied in its case by a pair of Italia Independent sunglasses with a frame made from the same striped teak-wood as the bezel of the watch. Pair it up with khaki shorts and a cringe-worthy Hawaiian-print shirt, and you’re good to go.
