Watches & Wonders 2021: IWC Schaffhausen Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41

The history of pilot’s watches at IWC stretches back to the early years of aviation – a pillar that is extremely close to the Schaffhausen based watchmaker. With a simple mantra of manufacturing clean, refined, to the point pilot watches, it comes as no surprise that IWC is usually the pick of the lot when someone wants a pilot watch.  Today, 85 years later, these watches are still developed in close collaboration with top pilots, just as they were in 1936. Feedback from the pilots about how the pilot’s watches perform in everyday use continues to help IWC engineers to improve and perfect their designs.

Building on the success of its Spitfire chronographs from 2019, IWC is now introducing 4 new Pilot’s Watch
Chronograph 41 references into its classic collection – Ref. IW388101 (Stainless steel case, blue dial, rhodium-plated hands, blue calfskin strap), Ref. IW388102 (Stainless steel case, blue dial, rhodium-plated hands, stainless steel bracelet), Ref. IW388103 (Stainless steel case, green dial, rhodium-plated hands, brown calfskin strap) and Ref. IW388104 (Stainless steel case, green dial, rhodium-plated hands, stainless steel bracelet).

 

All these models are offered in a reworked 41mm stainless steel case that ensures the chronographs are now water-resistant to 10 bar from the previous 6 bar. Visible through the sapphire glass back, is the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre – A mechanical chronograph movement that consists of 231 individual parts engineered with a focus on robustness, reliability and precision. This automatic movement is based on an integrated/column-wheel architecture – a complex component with two functional levels which is incredibly challenging to manufacture. A bi-directional pawl winding system supplies the movement with energy by efficiently converting the activity of the wearer’s arm into tension for the mainspring. It builds up a power reserve of 46 hours when fully wound.

A quick-change system allows wearers to quickly and easily change the strap or bracelet of the chronographs. Available as accessories in IWC boutiques or online on IWC.com is a choice of calfskin and rubber straps in attractive colours, as well as a new stainless steel bracelet with fine adjustment system and a slimmer shape for improved comfort and ergonomics.

Given how IWC has refreshed its Pilot’s line this year, wearer’s will be a little spoilt for choice as it really does cater to so many different tastes in one way or another.

Watches & Wonders 2021: IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Top Gun Edition ‘Mojave Desert’ and Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Edition ‘Mojave Desert’

Back in 2019, IWC Schaffhausen did the unexpected… unveiling their boldest Pilot’s Watch to date – The IWC Top Gun Mojave Desert. Did we like it? Hell Yeah… The biggest draw card being that soothing sand-coloured ceramic case – a colour created by the combination of zirconium oxide and other metallic oxides. This gorgeous eye-catching palette is actually inspired by the colours of the uniforms worn by US Navy pilots while the design is inspired by the China Lake Naval Station in the Mojave Desert. Building on the success of this model, at Watches & Wonders 2021, IWC unveiled two new timepieces in the same sand-coloured ceramic case – Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” and Big Pilot’s Watch TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert”. This is the first time the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer has used the material for the Big Pilot’s Watch.

Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” Ref. IW503004

This watch features a 46.5mm sand-coloured ceramic case complemented by a dark brown dial. It is fitted with a sapphire glass in the front and the back and water resistant to 6 bar. A stand out feature, is the decidedly distinctive perpetual calendar complication. The date, day, month, year and moon phase are neatly laid out on the dial and can all be adjusted via the crown at 3 o clock. The perpetual calendar identifies different month lengths and leap years automatically and will work until 2100 without needing any correction. The double moon display shows the moon correctly for both the northern and southern hemispheres and will need to be adjusted by one day only after 577.5 years. Beating inside the watch is the IWC-manufactured 52615 calibre. The automatic Pellaton winding system, reinforced with virtually wear- free ceramic components, builds up a power reserve of seven days in two barrels. The movement, including key elements like the rotor and the balance wheel, is visible through the sapphire crystal case back. Limited to 150 pieces per year, the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” Ref. IW503004 is presented on a sand-coloured rubber strap with textile inlay.

The Big Pilot’s Watch TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” Ref. IW506003

The Big Pilot’s Watch TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” Ref. IW506003 on the other hand is a little less complex. It features the same sand coloured ceramic case and subdued brown dial that forms the perfect canvas for the hour markers, hands, power reserve display, Date display, Central hacking seconds and other details that match the case. The only elements that offer significant contrast are the crown and the chronograph pushers, which are more in line with the titanium case back. Inside the 46mm case is an IWC manufactured 52110 calibre with Pellaton winding, two barrels, which can run for up to seven days when fully wound. A soft-iron inner cage effectively shields the movement from the effects of magnetic fields.  The legendary TOP GUN logo is engraved on the titanium case back. Given the fact that it’s a limited edition of 250 pieces, this timepiece is unique enough to become a real collectible. It is worn on a sand-coloured rubber strap with textile inlay.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” and the Big Pilot’s Watch TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” will be available from April 7th through IWC boutiques, authorised retail partners or online at IWC.com. INTRODUCING: IWC Schaffhausen Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute To 3705”

IWC Schaffhausen takes its fans back to its younger years with this fabulous 1000 piece limited edition Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705”.  The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705” was made to commemorate the legendary Ceramic Fliegerchronograph (ref. 3705) from 1994. Characterised by its luminous indices and hands, which had aged over time to a warm orange, and case made of black zirconium oxide ceramic, the “Black Flieger” was winning collector’s hearts with its distinct neovintage charm, before fading into obscurity for almost a quarter of a century, Today this cult classic is one of the most sought-after models from IWC’s recent history.

Keeping in tune with its inspiration, the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705” features a 41mm case made of Ceratanium® (instead of ceramic), a material as light and unbreakable as titanium, but also as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic. It’s an ideal choice, scoring well for its high skin tolerance and a striking matte black colour. In addition to the case, the chronograph pushers, crown and pin buckle are also made of Ceratanium®. The sapphire glass, which is secured against displacement by drop in air pressure, is convex and has antireflective coating on both sides.

The dial layout of the watch retains the classic appeal of the Ceramic Fliegerchronograph (ref. 3705) of the 90s. Two totalizers at 9 and 12 o’clock display stop times of up to 12 hours, the small second is located at 6 o’clock. Another feature is the day and date display at 3 o’clock. The rhodium hands and indices on the bright blue background have a luminescent coating which give the watch superior legibility.When it comes to the Pilot’s Line, IWC has been especially successful at creating no-nonsense designs to make its offerings particularly interesting to that boy in every man.

While the original ref. 3705 was powered by the Valjoux calibre 7750, the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705” boasts sophisticated movement technology from Schaffhausen. Under the closed Ceratanium caseback, the in-house 69380 calibre is at work. This robust and precise chronograph movement in classic column wheel design is one of the latest developments from IWC’s engineers. A bi-directional pawl winding system reliably builds up a power reserve of 46 hours.

IWC Schaffhausen has turned to its glorious aviation history to introduce its latest release – The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Edition “SFTI” In Black Ceramic And Ceratanium. Complementing the brands’ TOP GUN range of Pilot’s Watches, this new model is inspired by the “Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor” watch, which was created in 2018 in honor of the US Naval Aviation Community and is available only for TOPGUN /  Navy Fighter Weapons School graduates.

Sporting a distinctly contemporary aviator look, this watch is crafted from black zirconium oxide ceramic —44mm in diameter and water resistant to 6 bar—with a Ceratanium® case back that is emblazoned with the Top Gun emblem and ‘0001/1500’ indicating the watch’s limited edition status. Ceratanium® has also been used for pushers at 2 and 4 o clock. Specially designed to meet the specific requirements of elite jet pilots, the ceramic case ensures that pilots are not distracted by sunlight reflecting off their watches during the flight. The hard and scratch- resistant feature of ceramic is perfectly suited to daily use in a confined aircraft cockpit and can also withstand extreme G-forces. On the other hand, Ceratanium®, a trademark of Richemont International AG, IWC’s parent company is as light and unbreakable as titanium, but also as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic making it the perfect choice for the most demanding professions. Thanks to the combination of these two materials, the chronograph boasts an entirely matte black design.

The tactical look is completed by a black dial and black hands coated with luminescence. A date and weekday aperture sits at 3 o clock. The small second hand and the tail of the chronograph second hand, which takes the form of a jet, add a touch of red to the instrument-style dial.

INTRODUCING: IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42 and Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Ref. IW503312 ‘Boutique Edition’

No other complication expresses IWC’s values quite as eloquently as the perpetual calendar developed by legendary watchmaker Kurt Klaus in the 1980s. This year IWC is unveiling four new references featuring its iconic Perpetual Calendar complication – three Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42 (Ref. 3442) models (one being a ‘Boutique Edition’) and a 44.2mm ‘Boutique Edition’ formally known as the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Ref. IW503312. Adventurous or conservative, young or old, there’s something for every purist. Let’s get to it!

Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42

For the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42 (Ref. 3442), IWC has integrated its iconic complication for the first time with an in-house movement from the 82000-calibre family. The IWC-manufactured 82650 calibre which can also be admired through the transparent sapphire glass back, powers the calendar module with a single impulse during the night. The automatic Pellaton winding is equipped with zirconium oxide ceramic components and builds up a power reserve of 60 hours.

Hours and minutes are displayed centrally, while the displays for the date, month and day of the week are distributed over three subdials at 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock. The main highlight of the dial is, of course, the perpetual moon phase display at 6 o’clock. This has been integrated into the month display and deviates from the actual orbit of the moon by only one day after 577.5 years. An indicator in the weekday display counts the years until the next leap year.  Usually, perpetual calendars have a visually heavy appearance, given the level of indications that need to be displayed. However, this timepiece takes on the task effortlessly. To complete the look, the watches are worn on an alligator leather strap by Santoni.

Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Ref. IW503312 ‘Boutique Edition’

Presented in an 18-carat Armor Gold® case, the Maritime-inspired Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Ref. IW503312 ‘Boutique Edition’ like the name suggests measures 44.2mm in diameter. 18 ct Armor Gold®, an IWC invention, is a type of gold that is significantly harder and five to ten times as wear-resistant as conventional 5N gold. The material is produced using a sophisticated process, during which the microstructure of the alloy is transformed.

Despite its large size the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Ref. IW503312 sits very comfortably on the wrist. The blue dial, looks sensational and makes the gold-plated hands and 18-carat gold appliques really pop. Of course, this timepiece has a stellar perpetual calendar, displayed on the four sub-dial’s along with a moon phase indicator. In addition to the displays
for the date, day, month and moon phase, there’s also a four-digit year display, a small seconds and a power reserve display at. Turning the watch over reveals the IWC-manufactured 52610 calibre, which features a bidirectional Pellaton winding system fitted with components made of virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic. Two barrels build up a power reserve of seven days. The finishing of the movement in just spectacular – Understated, without being too over the top – Just the way IWC likes it. Fitted with a blue alligator leather strap by Santoni, this timepiece is water resistant to 3 Bar.

INTRODUCING: IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Yacht Club ‘Moon and Tide’ and Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph Third Generation Ref. 3907

Timekeeping plays a vital role in the maritime world. Few have picked up on this and have gone above and beyond to create specific timepieces for these activities, many of which have become synonymous with the brands today. Since 2010, IWC’s Portugieser Yacht Club has brought a sporting note to the family. As a nautical sports watch, it combines timeless elegance with ruggedness and high water-resistance. These characteristics make the Yacht Club an extremely versatile watch that cuts a fine figure both on water and land.

The big one for IWC this year, is the new Portugieser Yacht Club Moon and Tide – the first model to feature IWC’s newly developed tide indication and the Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph Ref. 3907 Third Generation which will be available in four versions.

IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Yacht Club ‘Moon and Tide’ Ref. 344001

Standing in a category of its own is the new Portugieser Yacht Club ‘Moon and Tide’ (Ref. 344001), the first watch from IWC to sport the newly developed tide indication.  A sub-dial at 6 o clock indicates the expected times for the next high and low tide while the double moon phase display at 12 o’clock has been enhanced to show spring and neap tides. Spring tides refers to the ‘springing forth’ of the tide during a new and full moon while Neap tides are moderate tides when the sun and moon are at right angles to each other, usually occurring seven days after a spring tide.

During the 12 hours and 24 minutes between two high tides, the display rotates by around 24 minutes on the 12-hour scale. The energy required to turn it is channelled by the basic movement’s hour pinion. The challenge facing the designers was to convert the rapid hourly rhythm into the much more leisurely rotation of the tidal disc. A reducing gear comprising three precisely calculated cogs slows the rotation to the point where the tidal disc rotates around its axis once in exactly 14.76 days. The tidal display module is integrated into the 82835 calibre and contains just 49 individual parts.

Because the display rotates continuously, it always shows the approximate time of the next high tide. If the arrow points to 12 o’clock at 10 o’clock in the morning, the next high tide will be a little later than 12 o’clock because, in the next two hours, the tidal disc will also move a little further. On the opposite side you can also read the approximate time for the next low tide. The exact times for high and low tide depend on the longitude. As a result, the display needs to be calibrated once using the tide tables for a specific location, such as New York, Lisbon or Sydney. According to this, the deviation is theoretically only 10 minutes in 100 years. The display works reliably on all coasts with two equally strong high and low tides per day.

THE MOON PHASE DISPLAY ALSO SHOWS SPRING AND NEAP TIDES

Another special feature of the Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide is the double moon phase display. It has been extended to include a special inscription and also provides information about the strength of the current tides. At full and new moon, the Earth, moon and sun are in a direct line. In this constellation, the tidal forces are cumulative and generate a spring tide – a particularly strong high tide. At half-moon, however, the sun and moon are at right angles to each other. The result of this is a weaker high tide, or “neap tide”. Exactly how high the water rises depends on the geographical location and the exact physical nature of the coast. While the tidal swell on the open sea is only about 30 centimetres, the sea level during high tide rises by up to 20 metres in the Canadian Bay of Fundy. So, anyone in charge of a boat would be well advised to take a look at the dial of their Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide.

The 44.6mm 18-carat 5N gold case, is designed with a distinctive blue dial and gold-plated hands and 18-carat gold appliques. You’ll also notice the seagoing theme extends all the way to the blue rubber strap with textile inlay. For the moment, this new reference is only available in 18-carat 5N gold gold but we’re pretty sure we’ll see more exotic executions in the coming years.

As for the movement, IWC has integrated an 82835 calibre (Developed in-house), which drives the double moon phase and tide module. This robust automatic movement features a Pellaton winding fitted with ceramic components and offers a power reserve of 60 hours. It can be viewed through the transparent sapphire glass back.

The new Portugieser Yacht Club ‘Moon and Tide’ (Ref. 344001) represents another step in the further technical evolution of IWC’s nautical inspired timepieces.

IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph Ref. 3907

In addition to the Portugieser Yacht Club ‘Moon and Tide’ Ref. 344001, IWC is also unveiling three new Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph (Third Generation) watches with ergonomic metal bracelets in either stainless steel or steel and 18-carat 5N gold. The third generation Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph is slightly larger than the second generation Summer Edition, with a diameter of 44.6mm. Having said that the overall demeanour of all three versions is still pretty casual.

A sub-dial at 12 o’clock displays the stopped hours and minutes in a single totaliser, while the one at 6 o’clock is the sweeping seconds with a stop mechanism. Thanks to its flyback function, the stopwatch hands can be returned to zero simply by pressing the reset button, and a new timing sequence starts immediately. The date window now sits in a sub dial at 6 o clock instead of the 3 o clock position as seen in the first and second generation models. Ticking away inside these watches is an IWC-manufactured 89361 calibre with automatic winding that builds up a power reserve of 68 hours. The movement can be viewed through the transparent case back.

The IWC family stands together for the launch of ‘TIME WELL SHARED’

In a move to inspire people to make the most of their time, and entertain and support them by keeping them connected and engaged, members of the global IWC family are standing together to launch: “TIME WELL SHARED”; an initiative  that encompasses online lectures, speeches and webinars that IWC will publish on digital channels during the next few weeks.

The aim here is to entertain and support people in these difficult times and will include contributions from IWC brand ambassadors like Tom Brady, Fabian Cancellara, David Coulthard and Maro Engel and partners such as Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1, Tottenham Hotspur, Laureus Sport for Good, Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation, Solaris Yachts and Orlebar Brown.

For example, Pilot Matt Jones will share memories of last year’s “Silver Spitfire – The Longest Flight” expedition. Retired US Navy Captain and TOPGUN pilot Jim DiMatteo will elaborate on Navy Fighter Squadron values like performance, resilience and precision in business. Closer to home, David Seyffer, curator of the IWC Museum, will give insights into the history of IWC, and former Director of Marketing and Sales, Hannes Pantli, will divulge some never-before-told IWC stories.

Through our spontaneous initiative, we want to offer a new way of staying in touch with the IWC family. INTRODUCING: IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Blue Angels®”

In the world of pilot’s watches few can do what IWC do. Ever since the Schaffhausen based brand was chosen to build watches for the German air force in 1940, the bond between IWC and pilot’s watches have been inseparable. Recently, IWC Schaffhausen became the official licensee of the “Blue Angels®” U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron… and the result of this collaboration…. the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Blue Angels®”

Formed in 1946, the “Blue Angels®” was a vision of Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Today this U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron is made up from 141 members of the Navy and Marines. In addition to spectacular solo performances, the aerobatic repertoire also involves maneuvers in the challenging delta formation of six F/A-18 Hornet jets. Every year, the “Blue Angels®” demonstrate their skills in front of approximately 11 million spectators.

Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Blue Angels®”

Playing upon the theme of the Blue Angels, this sporty chronograph is very much in line with IWC’s current Pilot’s collection. The 44.5mm sandblasted case is very impactful and made from polished black zirconium oxide ceramic. In stark contrast to the black case is that lovely blue metallic dial and the pushers and crown which have been executed in steel.

The display of the minutes on the outer ring (in white) and the hours on the inner ring of the dial (in yellow), have all been inspired by early military observer’s watches of the 1930s and 1940s. Other details include the signature sword-style hands, arabic numerals, the timed hours and minutes which sit together on a subdial at 12 o’clock, the running seconds subdial at 6 o’clock and a date window which has been strategically placed at 3.

Armed with an in-house mechanical chronograph movement (Calibre 89361), the watch delivers a power reserve of 68 hours. Thanks to the integrated flyback function, simply pressing the reset push-button returns the stopwatch hands to zero and immediately starts a new time measurement. An inner cage made from soft iron protects the movement to prevent magnetic fields affecting its precision. The front glass features special protection to ensure it stays in place even if there is a sudden drop in pressure.

Worn on a blue textured calf leather strap, the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Blue Angels®” is priced at approximately $16,400 Australian Dollars.

Celebrating Invention: IWC Schaffhausen’s 150th Jubilee tribute to Pallweber

In a fitting recognition of a legacy born a century and a half ago, IWC Schaffhausen celebrates its 150th Jubilee with a special collection of 27 limited edition watches that best define its history.

The name itself has a nice ring to it and 27 watches that comprise this 150-year celebration represent all the main design collections offered by IWC Schaffhausen including the Portugesier, Portofino, Da Vinci and Pilot lines. The Jubilee collection also has a new Tribute to Pallweber line of watches, newly developed and designed especially for the occasion.

Vintage Re-invention

IWC Schaffhausen takes re-inventing the wheel to a new dimension with the Tribute to Pallweber watches for its 150th Jubilee Collection. In an homage to the original Pallweber pocket-watch designed by the brand in 1884, IWC has created a series of mechanical wristwatches with a digital time display.

The complex system of gear trains, balances, barrels and other components of the watch movement form the basis of an endless discussion amongst watch aficionados, but before we get into any of that, here is a look at what makes these Tribute to Pallweber watches special.

The Tribute to Pallweber watches come in three variants, one in platinum, limited to just 25 pieces, 250 pieces in 18K red gold and a steel version with 500 pieces and all feature a specially crafted lacquer dial which resembles the original enamel of the Pallweber pocket-watches.

The unconventionally displayed hours and minutes appear in two separate windows along the center of the dial, with the hours at 12 o’clock and the minutes in the middle of the dial. The windows are conveniently labelled too, just in case. A small seconds counter sits at 6 o’clock and features the only ‘hand’ on this 45mm watch, which has a decidedly art-deco look and feel.

The platinum and red gold Tribute to Pallweber watches have white lacquer dials with black printed details and blue or white time windows respectively. The stainless-steel model has a beautiful blue dial with black printed details and white time windows. All the watches, like every watch in the Jubilee Collection have black alligator leather straps, which add an air of formality to the collection.

Even more exciting is the 50-piece limited edition 18K red gold Tribute to Pallweber Edition ‘150 Years’ pocket-watch with a red gold chain that rounds out the ingenious line.

IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph: As Summer-Ready as you’ll ever be

While us Melbournians here are bracing for probably what might be one of the coldest winters, the rest of the world’s getting their summer to-do’s out; including our friends at IWC Schaffhausen. As part of its “Summer Editions” collection, IWC Schaffhausen is introducing a new edition of the Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph.

IWC has gone with a beautiful blue, grey and white colour scheme adding a touch of summer to your wrist. The 43.5mm stainless steel case with an integrated crown guard, houses a blue dial with white counters, rhodium-plated hands and the red second hand of the chronograph produce an overall look that’s deliberately casual. The 89361 manufacture calibre with flyback function indicates the measured hours and minutes together on a subdial at 12 o’clock, while the quarter-second scale that surrounds the dial allows for precise measurement of shorter time periods. The transparent case-back in sapphire crystal offers an unimpeded view of the mechanical inner workings of this sporty chronograph. The watch is water-resistant to 6 bar.

The second highlight of the “Summer Editions” collection is a special collection of fabric straps that IWC Schaffhausen is launching for some of its most popular classic watches – all available in seasonal designs that use pale blue or light grey colours. The following versions are available:

  • Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII and Pilot’s Watch Chronograph: Four fabric straps (blue, light grey, blue with light grey trim, light grey with blue trim)
  • Portofino Automatic and Portofino Chronograph: Two fabric straps (blue, light grey)
  • Portugieser Chronograph: Two fabric straps (blue, light grey)

The straps are only available for a limited time period as accessories to the models listed above. They can be fitted to your watch, whether an old favourite or a brand new purchase, at any IWC boutique.
