Measuring 43mm in diameter, the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” boasts multiple “firsts.” It is the first Pilot‘s Watch Chronograph with a case made of extremely light and scratch-resistant titanium and the first to feature the 69385 caliber. A14.9mm thick case might seem like a lot but the titanium body clearly makes up for the weight. The Grade 5 titanium finish gives the watch its matte grey appearance, inspired by AMG‘s signature Selenite Grey Magno paint finish. The chronograph pushers are placed at the two and four o’clock positions while the lugs hold a black embossed calf leather strap with contrast stitching and folding clasp.

The highlight of this piece would have to be the woven carbon fibre dial, a material directly derived from AMG‘s aero components. These parts are produced in a complex process involving heat and pressure and are known for their remarkable lightness and rigidity. The raw material is continuous carbon fibres, which are processed on weaving machines into textile structures, giving the end product its characteristic woven “carbon look”. The black carbon dial provides the perfect contrast to the silver chronograph sub-dials, reminiscent of motorsport instruments. Personally, I would’ve loved to see an Ingenieur base used for this collaboration piece but hey no complaints.

Powering this watch is an IWC-manufactured calibre 69385 – a robust and precise chronograph movement that enables stop time measurements of up to 12 hours. The chronograph function is controlled by a column wheel, an intricate component with two functional levels. The Mercedes-AMG logo is emblazoned on the tinted sapphire crystal case back. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” is priced at AUD $14,300 and will be available for pre-order from 21st May online at IWC.com, through IWC boutiques and authorised retail partners. The timepiece is eligible for registration under the My IWC care program and thus benefits from a 6-year extension to the standard 2-year International Limited Warranty.

Watches & Wonders 2021: IWC Schaffhausen Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41

The history of pilot’s watches at IWC stretches back to the early years of aviation – a pillar that is extremely close to the Schaffhausen based watchmaker. With a simple mantra of manufacturing clean, refined, to the point pilot watches, it comes as no surprise that IWC is usually the pick of the lot when someone wants a pilot watch.  Today, 85 years later, these watches are still developed in close collaboration with top pilots, just as they were in 1936. Feedback from the pilots about how the pilot’s watches perform in everyday use continues to help IWC engineers to improve and perfect their designs.

Building on the success of its Spitfire chronographs from 2019, IWC is now introducing 4 new Pilot’s Watch
Chronograph 41 references into its classic collection – Ref. IW388101 (Stainless steel case, blue dial, rhodium-plated hands, blue calfskin strap), Ref. IW388102 (Stainless steel case, blue dial, rhodium-plated hands, stainless steel bracelet), Ref. IW388103 (Stainless steel case, green dial, rhodium-plated hands, brown calfskin strap) and Ref. IW388104 (Stainless steel case, green dial, rhodium-plated hands, stainless steel bracelet).

 

All these models are offered in a reworked 41mm stainless steel case that ensures the chronographs are now water-resistant to 10 bar from the previous 6 bar. Visible through the sapphire glass back, is the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre – A mechanical chronograph movement that consists of 231 individual parts engineered with a focus on robustness, reliability and precision. This automatic movement is based on an integrated/column-wheel architecture – a complex component with two functional levels which is incredibly challenging to manufacture. A bi-directional pawl winding system supplies the movement with energy by efficiently converting the activity of the wearer’s arm into tension for the mainspring. It builds up a power reserve of 46 hours when fully wound.

A quick-change system allows wearers to quickly and easily change the strap or bracelet of the chronographs. Available as accessories in IWC boutiques or online on IWC.com is a choice of calfskin and rubber straps in attractive colours, as well as a new stainless steel bracelet with fine adjustment system and a slimmer shape for improved comfort and ergonomics.

Given how IWC has refreshed its Pilot’s line this year, wearer’s will be a little spoilt for choice as it really does cater to so many different tastes in one way or another.

IWC Schaffhausen Attains a Chain-of-Custody (CoC) Certification From The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC)

Founded in 2005, the Responsible Jewellery Council is an international not-for-profit standards and certification organisation for the watch and jewellery industry. Members of the RJC commit to and are independently audited against the RJC Code of Practices – an international standard on responsible business practices for diamonds, gold and platinum group metals. The Code of Practices (COP) addresses human rights, labour rights, environmental impact, mining practices, product disclosure and many more important topics in the jewellery supply chain. RJC’s Chain-of-Custody Certification (CoC) for precious metals supports these initiatives and can be used as a tool to deliver broader Member and stakeholder benefit. Through the implementation of the COP and CoC members contribute towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 agenda.

IWC Schaffhausen first joined the Responsible Jewellery Council in 2012, after recognising the Council’s crucial role in upholding responsibility standards right across the global jewellery supply chain, in line with UN Guiding Principles of Business and Human Rights and OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) Due Diligence Guidance. Ever since the brand has been adhering to the RJC’s Code of Practices (COP). In 2020, IWC led its sector by becoming the first luxury watchmaker to meet the more stringent COP standards introduced by the RJC in 2019. This revised code included stronger provisions for responsible business practices, activities and supply chain management. Today the Schaffhausen based watchmaker has attained a Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certification from the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) – a voluntary standard which certifies that the gold and platinum used in the company’s supply chain are fully traceable and responsibly sourced.

INTRODUCING: IWC Schaffhausen Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute To 3705”

IWC Schaffhausen takes its fans back to its younger years with this fabulous 1000 piece limited edition Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705”.  The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705” was made to commemorate the legendary Ceramic Fliegerchronograph (ref. 3705) from 1994. Characterised by its luminous indices and hands, which had aged over time to a warm orange, and case made of black zirconium oxide ceramic, the “Black Flieger” was winning collector’s hearts with its distinct neovintage charm, before fading into obscurity for almost a quarter of a century, Today this cult classic is one of the most sought-after models from IWC’s recent history.

Keeping in tune with its inspiration, the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705” features a 41mm case made of Ceratanium® (instead of ceramic), a material as light and unbreakable as titanium, but also as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic. It’s an ideal choice, scoring well for its high skin tolerance and a striking matte black colour. In addition to the case, the chronograph pushers, crown and pin buckle are also made of Ceratanium®. The sapphire glass, which is secured against displacement by drop in air pressure, is convex and has antireflective coating on both sides.

The dial layout of the watch retains the classic appeal of the Ceramic Fliegerchronograph (ref. 3705) of the 90s. Two totalizers at 9 and 12 o’clock display stop times of up to 12 hours, the small second is located at 6 o’clock. Another feature is the day and date display at 3 o’clock. The rhodium hands and indices on the bright blue background have a luminescent coating which give the watch superior legibility.When it comes to the Pilot’s Line, IWC has been especially successful at creating no-nonsense designs to make its offerings particularly interesting to that boy in every man.

While the original ref. 3705 was powered by the Valjoux calibre 7750, the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705” boasts sophisticated movement technology from Schaffhausen. Under the closed Ceratanium caseback, the in-house 69380 calibre is at work. This robust and precise chronograph movement in classic column wheel design is one of the latest developments from IWC’s engineers. A bi-directional pawl winding system reliably builds up a power reserve of 46 hours.

IWC Schaffhausen has turned to its glorious aviation history to introduce its latest release – The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Edition “SFTI” In Black Ceramic And Ceratanium. Complementing the brands’ TOP GUN range of Pilot’s Watches, this new model is inspired by the “Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor” watch, which was created in 2018 in honor of the US Naval Aviation Community and is available only for TOPGUN /  Navy Fighter Weapons School graduates.

Sporting a distinctly contemporary aviator look, this watch is crafted from black zirconium oxide ceramic —44mm in diameter and water resistant to 6 bar—with a Ceratanium® case back that is emblazoned with the Top Gun emblem and ‘0001/1500’ indicating the watch’s limited edition status. Ceratanium® has also been used for pushers at 2 and 4 o clock. Specially designed to meet the specific requirements of elite jet pilots, the ceramic case ensures that pilots are not distracted by sunlight reflecting off their watches during the flight. The hard and scratch- resistant feature of ceramic is perfectly suited to daily use in a confined aircraft cockpit and can also withstand extreme G-forces. Thanks to the combination of these two materials, the chronograph boasts an entirely matte black design.

The tactical look is completed by a black dial and black hands coated with luminescence. A date and weekday aperture sits at 3 o clock. The small second hand and the tail of the chronograph second hand, which takes the form of a jet, add a touch of red to the instrument-style dial.

Watches & Wonders Shanghai 2020: IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Chronograph Ref. IW371617 On A Stainless Steel Bracelet

The Portugieser collection by IWC has a reputation for being remarkably crafted, and rightly so.  This week at Watches & Wonders Shanghai 2020, IWC Schaffhausen unveiled an even more versatile version of the iconic Portugieser Chronograph. For the very first time, the elegant and sporty chronograph is being presented on a high-quality stainless steel bracelet bracelet with a butterfly folding clasp.

With its 41mm stainless steel case, the Portugieser Chronograph Ref. IW371617 is just the right size for any kind of wrist. The highlight of this piece though is the bracelet. It is beautifully detailed and elaborately finished with polished and satin-finished surfaces. Thanks to the butterfly folding clasp, the watch sits ergonomically on the wrist and provides excellent wearing comfort. The slim feuille blue hour and minute hands and blue appliques, contrast the silvery-white dial wonderfully. Two chronograph pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock on the right side of the case facilitate easy handling of the chronograph functions.

INTRODUCING: IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot’s Watch Big Date Spitfire Edition “Mission Accomplished”

On August 5 2019, two British Pilots Steve Boultbee Brooks and Matt Jones embarked on their first ever round-the-world flight in a beautifully restored Spitfire. As the main partner and official timekeeper of the “Silver Spitfire – The Longest Flight” expedition and to honour the four-month-long record flight around the world, that covered more than 43,000 kilometres, IWC has unveiled a new 500 piece limited edition timepiece – Big Pilot’s Watch Big Date Spitfire Edition “Mission Accomplished” (Ref. IW510506).

Keeping in tune with IWC’s fleet of Pilot’s Watches, unveiled at SIHH 2019, the new Big Pilot’s Watch Big Date Spitfire Edition “Mission Accomplished” (Ref. IW510506) comes in a large yet refined 46.2mm bronze case (a material which develops a unique patina over time) with an earthy green dial. The striking conical crown on the right side of the case screws down to ensure water resistance upto 6 bar and in terms of its design, harks back to the pioneering days of aviation. The large size of the crown allows wearers to set and wind their watch even when wearing thick gloves or in the context of pilot’s – a padded flight suit.

There are two elements in particular though that stand out the most for me about this new release. Firstly the large digit date at “12 o’clock”. This is represented by a double date ring, one for the 10s and a second one for the 1s. Secondly, the Power reserve indicator which is located on the back of the watch and visible through a porthole in the titanium case back. Is it a new design directive for IWC? Will we be seeing more of this in the future? Only time will tell. But for now all I can say is it’s quite refreshing. The gold plated hands and brown calfskin strap rounds of the full military, utilitarian look.

Inside this stunning and resilient watch is an IWC manufactured hand wound 59235 calibre, which can run for up to 8 days when fully wound. With its soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields and sapphire glass secured against sudden falls in air pressure, the Big Pilot’s Watch Big Date Spitfire Edition “Mission Accomplished” (Ref. IW510506) has all the credentials of a watch designed for flying. A unique engraving on the case back commemorates the successful completion of the “Silver Spitfire – The Longest Flight” expedition, which IWC supported as the primary sponsor and “Official Timekeeper”.

INTRODUCING: IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42 and Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Ref. IW503312 ‘Boutique Edition’

No other complication expresses IWC’s values quite as eloquently as the perpetual calendar developed by legendary watchmaker Kurt Klaus in the 1980s. This year IWC is unveiling four new references featuring its iconic Perpetual Calendar complication – three Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42 (Ref. 3442) models (one being a ‘Boutique Edition’) and a 44.2mm ‘Boutique Edition’ formally known as the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Ref. IW503312. Adventurous or conservative, young or old, there’s something for every purist. Let’s get to it!

Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42

For the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42 (Ref. 3442), IWC has integrated its iconic complication for the first time with an in-house movement from the 82000-calibre family. The IWC-manufactured 82650 calibre which can also be admired through the transparent sapphire glass back, powers the calendar module with a single impulse during the night. The automatic Pellaton winding is equipped with zirconium oxide ceramic components and builds up a power reserve of 60 hours.

Hours and minutes are displayed centrally, while the displays for the date, month and day of the week are distributed over three subdials at 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock. The main highlight of the dial is, of course, the perpetual moon phase display at 6 o’clock. This has been integrated into the month display and deviates from the actual orbit of the moon by only one day after 577.5 years. An indicator in the weekday display counts the years until the next leap year.  Usually, perpetual calendars have a visually heavy appearance, given the level of indications that need to be displayed. However, this timepiece takes on the task effortlessly. To complete the look, the watches are worn on an alligator leather strap by Santoni.

Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Ref. IW503312 ‘Boutique Edition’

Presented in an 18-carat Armor Gold® case, the Maritime-inspired Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Ref. IW503312 ‘Boutique Edition’ like the name suggests measures 44.2mm in diameter. 18 ct Armor Gold®, an IWC invention, is a type of gold that is significantly harder and five to ten times as wear-resistant as conventional 5N gold. The material is produced using a sophisticated process, during which the microstructure of the alloy is transformed.

Despite its large size the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Ref. IW503312 sits very comfortably on the wrist. The blue dial, looks sensational and makes the gold-plated hands and 18-carat gold appliques really pop. Of course, this timepiece has a stellar perpetual calendar, displayed on the four sub-dial’s along with a moon phase indicator. In addition to the displays
for the date, day, month and moon phase, there’s also a four-digit year display, a small seconds and a power reserve display at. Turning the watch over reveals the IWC-manufactured 52610 calibre, which features a bidirectional Pellaton winding system fitted with components made of virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic. Two barrels build up a power reserve of seven days. The finishing of the movement in just spectacular – Understated, without being too over the top – Just the way IWC likes it. Fitted with a blue alligator leather strap by Santoni, this timepiece is water resistant to 3 Bar.

The IWC family stands together for the launch of ‘TIME WELL SHARED’

In a move to inspire people to make the most of their time, and entertain and support them by keeping them connected and engaged, members of the global IWC family are standing together to launch: “TIME WELL SHARED”; an initiative  that encompasses online lectures, speeches and webinars that IWC will publish on digital channels during the next few weeks.

The aim here is to entertain and support people in these difficult times and will include contributions from IWC brand ambassadors like Tom Brady, Fabian Cancellara, David Coulthard and Maro Engel and partners such as Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1, Tottenham Hotspur, Laureus Sport for Good, Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation, Solaris Yachts and Orlebar Brown.

For example, Pilot Matt Jones will share memories of last year’s “Silver Spitfire – The Longest Flight” expedition. Retired US Navy Captain and TOPGUN pilot Jim DiMatteo will elaborate on Navy Fighter Squadron values like performance, resilience and precision in business. Closer to home, David Seyffer, curator of the IWC Museum, will give insights into the history of IWC, and former Director of Marketing and Sales, Hannes Pantli, will divulge some never-before-told IWC stories.

“In these extraordinary times, we would like to reach out to people with a message of solidarity, hope and positivity. Through our spontaneous initiative, we want to offer a new way of staying in touch with the IWC family. INTRODUCING: IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Chronograph Ref 3716 Now With In-House Movement And See-Through Caseback

Ever since the IWC Portugieser Ref 3714, made its debut in 1998, it has become one of the most recognizable / bestselling models, in the Portugieser family. Now IWC Schaffhausen, has unveiled a reworked version of the Portugieser Chronograph which boasts a brand new high quality in-house IWC-manufactured 69355 calibre. From a design standpoint, IWC has left majority of the collections key elements unchanged such as its clean, open dial, two recessed totalizers and flange with quarter-second scale.

All six Portugieser Chronograph ref. 3716 watches look very elegant in their 41mm cases (0.1mm larger than Ref 3714), and are water resistant to 3 bar (30m). They sport a convex sapphire crystal glass, with antireflective coatings on either side. Refined men, with refined tastes, will enjoy the open, clean, functional dial, with two recessed totalizers at “6 o’clock” and “12 o’clock”, appliquéd Arabic numerals, slim feuille hands, and the filigree bezel. The flange, printed with a quarter-second scale, enables precision reading of stopwatch times and gives this timeless Portugieser a subtle, sporty touch.

The see-through caseback allows the wearer to enjoy the beauty of Calibre 69355, a robust chronograph movement in a classic column-wheel design, made up of 194 individual parts. A bidirectional pawl-winding system reliably builds up a power reserve of 46 hours.
