Evoking the unknown and the unexplored and reminding us of the mysteries and romance associated with the moon, the black ceramic Omega Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon Apollo 8 shows two sides, just like the moon itself.
Crafted to mark 50 years since the Apollo 8 mission orbited the moon in 1968, making its crew the first humans to witness the ‘dark side of the moon’, the Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon Apollo 8 is a new addition to Omega’s popular Dark Side of the Moon collection.
The skeletonized dial of the Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon Apollo 8 provides a clear view of the famous ‘Moonwatch’ movement, which has been specially modified and re-named the calibre 1869 to mark the first moon landing. The manually-wound movement has been blackened, and expertly decorated using laser ablation in order to realistically portray the surface of the moon.
In true Omega fashion, no detail is too small to overlook, and the dial side of the movement has been crafted in a lighter shade, to represent the moon as seen from earth, complete with craters and shadows. The back of the movement is a deeper black, to accurately show the dark side of the moon, seen only by astronauts.
Darkness and Light
To complement the 44.25mm black ceramic case of the Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon Apollo 8, Omega has used yellow accents throughout the watch. The colour yellow is most closely associated with speed, and is a fitting choice for this Speedmaster.
The Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon Apollo 8 has a black leather strap which conceals a layer of yellow rubber in the middle. Micro-perforations along the strap reveal the yellow inside, which matches the ‘Tachymetre’ and ‘Speedmaster’ wording on the bezel and dial as well as the yellow chronograph hand.
In a final fitting tribute, the case back is engraved with the famous quote ‘’We’ll see you on the other side’, spoken by Jim Lovell, the Command Module Pilot of the Apollo 8 mission, mere seconds before the spaceship started its orbit of the dark side of the moon.
