The new Oris Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115 is by no means your average Pilot’s Watch. With this new release, Oris has entered a completely different territory taking the spirit of Calibre 110 in creating a fully skeletonised Oris movement. Traditionally, skeletonisation provided a window for a watchmaker’s talents, but this movement had higher ambitions. It had to reconnect people to how things work.
Movement
The Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115 lays bare its inner workings. According to the company’s Chief Operating Officer
Beat Fischli, open-working its in-house movement took nearly two years of research and development. True to the watchmakers ‘Real Watches for Real People’ philosophy, you’ll notice there is no varnish or unnecessary decoration on the movement. Calibre 115’s skeletonised bridges are matt grey, rather than polished or engraved. The edges too have not been chamfered or bevelled, instead, they’ve been left in their natural state.
What Oris has done here, is truly outstanding. The grey landscape of the dial and movement makes the watch perfectly legible, yet interestingly intricate. The hands and markers are generously coated with Super-LumiNova® creating a nice contrast. Just like the 110, 115 offers an impressive uninterrupted 10-day power reserve, thanks to a larger mainspring barrel (At 12 o clock). The movement also has a non-linear power-reserve indicator between 7 and 8 o clock, that is managed by a ‘worm-gear’, an exclusive Oris innovation found in Oris’s series of in-house developed calibres. This clever mechanical device controls the speed at which the power reserve indicator moves around the subdial at 3 o’clock.
Case
The 44mm multi-piece titanium case is lightweight, durable and hypoallergenic. The knurled bezel motif is inspired by jet engine turbine blades and only adds to its pilot watch credentials.
Bracelet
Unique to the Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115, is the titanium bracelet with ‘lift’ clasp that is also very in-sync with the whole futuristic look. If bracelet is not your thing, you also have the option of a black leather strap with titanium ‘lift’ clasp.
Who is the Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115 for? The wearer of this watch is on an adventure of discovery. They want to learn more about the world and themselves. They want access to a new level of understanding. That’s what it means to Go Your Own Way. And that’s why Oris claims, the Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115 is as nature intended. It is pure Oris.
