Protecting one of Australia’s largest and most diverse reef systems, The Great Barrier Reef, from the threat of coral bleaching among others has been a top priority for Oris for quite some time. Since 2016, the independent Swiss Watch company has partnered with the Reef Restoration Foundation based in Northern Queensland, supporting coral plantation projects off Fitzroy Island near Cairns. In an endeavour, to bring change for the better, Oris has created the third instalment of its Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition timepiece. Introducing the Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition III.
Based on the legendary Oris Aquis, the overall colour palette of this high-performance diver’s watch is extremely refreshing. The gradient aqua blue dial and aqua blue ceramic bezel stands out instantly and is a nod to the colours of the reef waters. What accentuates the presence of the dial even further is the circular date window at the centre, the discrete yellow accents and the small seconds indicator at 9 o’clock. The indexes and the hands are coated with Super-LumiNova for greater legibility even in low light conditions. The signature ‘Aquis’ name has been proudly placed just above 6 o’clock.
The 43.5mm case is constructed in stainless steel and with a thickness of just 1.7inches, the watch slips under a sleeve cuff quite easily. The screw-in crown helps maintain the 300m of water resistance. On the right hand side of the case, the crown-protectors have been given a lean profile in accordance with the overall construction of the watch. Just in case you thought Oris packed the best in the case, one look at the caseback will get you thinking again. It features special engravings of corals and the Southern Cross, a star constellation also found on the Australian Flag and only visible in the Southern Hemisphere
Inside the watch is an impeccable and flawless Oris movement, the calibre 743, a modified automatic Sellita SW 200 with a power reserve of 38-hours. Limited to 2000 pieces, the Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition III is miles away from disappointing a watch aficionado. With part of the proceeds of the sales being donated to the Reef Restoration Foundation, you can rest assure you’ve done well with this watch.
