The Panerai Lo Scienziato Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titanio is a mind-boggling demonstration of technological innovation and advancement.
With a 47mm titanium case that has been entirely 3D printed as a single unit using a technique known as Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), the Lo Scienziato is a high-tech, incredibly lightweight horological marvel.
Featherweight Functionality
The lightness of titanium is further enhanced by using the DMLS technique, which builds up an object by applying layer after layer of powdered titanium using a fiber optic laser. Each layer is only 0.02mm thick, which makes the number of functions on the Lo Scienziato even more remarkable. This highly advanced timepiece displays hours, minutes and small seconds and also has a second time zone indicator and a 24-hour indicator on the dial.
The 6-day power reserve indicator is visible through the sapphire crystal window in the caseback, and there is also a tourbillon with skeletonized bridges. The tourbillon employs a mechanism patented by Panerai which more effectively counters the effect of gravity, enhancing the accuracy of the watch.
The skeletonized design of the Lo Scienziato allows the intricate working of this complex watch to be admired and appreciated from both sides of the dial.
Sport and Sophistication
The sophisticated P.2005/T skeleton, hand-wound movement is entirely created by Panerai, and like the case of the Lo Scienziato uses titanium instead of steel, further reducing the weight of this streamlined timepiece.
The black leather strap is accented by blue stitching to match the blue of the hands, a colour that is also used on the flange, blending perfectly with the subtle metallic sheen of the brushed titanium case. This contrast gives an overall sporty look to the exceptionally technical Lo Scienziato and results in a versatile watch suitable for a diverse wearer.
The Lo Scienziato Lo Scienziato Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titanio is the reinvention of the original Lo Scienziato, introduced in 2016 and in our opinion, heralds a new, uncharted path forward in the world of fine watchmaking.
