Watches & Wonders 2021: Panerai Luminor Chrono Luna Rossa PAM01303

The new Panerai Luminor Chrono Luna Rossa PAM01303 is without a doubt, one of the most impressive releases from Panerai at Watches & Wonders 2021. It picks up from the 20 piece blue-dialed limited edition Panerai Luna Rossa GMT unveiled last November to celebrate the watchmakers appointment as the Official Timekeeper of the Prada Cup.

Clearly one of the most intriguing looking Luminor’s created in a while, this one features a 44mm cushion-shaped brushed steel case and a polished bezel. The crown is made from brushed steel and is protected by Panerai’s signature crown protecting device which helps the watch maintain its 100m water resistance. The lugs are curved down without overpowering the wrist. PAM01303 stands apart from traditional chronographs thanks to the placement of the start, stop and reset pushers on the left.

Perhaps the most incredible feat of the Panerai Luminor Chrono Luna Rossa PAM01303 is its amazing legibility, day or night. This is the result of the sandwich dial construction where the hour markers and the 12 and 6 Arabic numerals are filled with white Super-LumiNova with green luminescence. Other details on the dial include: a seconds counter at 9 o’clock, chronograph minutes counter at 3 o’clock, central chronograph seconds hand and a tachymeter scale on the flange designed to extend its use on land. The sub-dials are balanced, well-positioned and well-proportioned. The Red and white details, truly enrich the dial.

As for the mechanics inside this watch, Panerai relies on a new self-winding P.9200 Calibre, a tangible manifestation of the chronograph complication. The movement stands out for the presence of a single barrel that stores sufficient energy for a 42-hour power reserve.

The Luminor Chrono Luna Rossa features two bi-material bracelets with a rubber structure which ensures quality and long durability, and a technical waterproof material on the surface, a solution that makes the Luna Rossa bracelets ideal for sports activities. Also included is a tool to allow interchangeability of the straps and a screwdriver for removing the buckle. All the materials are housed in a box encased in sailcloth and signed by Panerai and Luna Rossa

Watches & Wonders 2021: Panerai Luminor Chrono PAM01109, PAM01218, PAM01110

For Panerai, 2021 is a year dedicated to the Chronograph. If you’re a true Paneristi, the Mare Nostrum project would immediately ring a bell. Created in 1943, this was Panerai’s first Chronograph – a model designed to serve the deck officers of the Italian Navy. In light of the brands’ rich history and to reaffirms its role in the sphere of chronography, Panerai has unveiled 3 new Luminor Chrono watches : Luminor Chrono PAM01109 (brushed stainless steel case with a black matt finish dial, black alligator strap), PAM01218 (brushed stainless steel case with a white matt finish dial, black alligator strap) and PAM01110 (brushed stainless steel case, blue dial with satiné soleil finishing, brushed and polished AISI 316L steel bracelet) – all featuring high-performance new proprietary calibres developed by the research and development department within Panerai’s Neuchâtel manufacture, the Laboratorio di Idee, a hub for innovation and avant-garde imagination.

Aesthetically these watches look great, a nice point of differentiation being the chronograph controls which reside on the left side of the 44mm brushed case. Other details include the polished bezel, safety lock crown protection device (protected by trademark), lever, crown and chrono pushers in brushed steel. With a transparent sapphire crystal glass and a twelve-sided screwed in case back in brushed steel, the watch has a water resistance of up to 10 bar i.e. 100 meters.

The dial of these watches, are assembled in the classic ‘sandwich’ design. Taking centre stage are two chronograph counters – a seconds counter at 9 o’clock and a minutes counter at 3 o’clock with blue hands. The sky blue tipped central chronograph seconds hand adds a subtle pop of colour. Each Luminor Chrono features a “base 1000” tachymeter scale on the edge of the dial, allowing the wearer to calculate average speed over a predefined distance, in kilometers or miles.

 

To ensure a unified identity among the models, all feature the new Caliber P.9200 with chronograph function. It is an efficient, high-performance self-winding movement thanks to the 42-hour power reserve ensured by the energy stored within a single barrel.

The Luminor Chrono PAM01109 and PAM01218 models feature two straps, in alligator leather and rubber, equipped with a trapezoidal pin buckle in brushed steel. The Luminor Chrono PAM01110, designed to be slim, light and ergonomic, is characterized by the folding clasp with slimmer blades and “OP” logo. Moreover, the links of the bracelet are inspired by the emblematic Panerai safety lock system. All the Luminor Chrono have the strap interchangeable system giving the client the opportunity to move from metal bracelet to alligator or calf and vice versa.

INTRODUCING: Officine Panerai Luminor Marina 44mm Guillaume Néry Edition PAM01122

French freediving world record holder and Panerai brand ambassador Guillaume Néry are back once again – this time to unveil a spectacular new 70 piece limited edition Luminor Marina in sandblasted DMLS titanium with a dressy black dégradé dial. Meet the new Luminor Marina 44mm Guillaume Néry Edition PAM01122.

This watch combines some pretty crazy high-tech features with a stealthy, sporty profile. The case is made from DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) technology, a relatively new technology for Panerai which was only unveiled last year. Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technology is a futuristic 3D printing process by which titanium powder is melted in tiny amounts by a high power fiber optic laser, layer by layer, i.e, 30 microns (0.03 mm) at a time, until the case takes a solid shape. It is a one of a kind process that allows for the interior of the case to be hollowed out, hence making the watch incredibly light and resilient.

 

Other details include the Titanium bezel, crown and bridge lever with rubberized coating, Safety Lock crown protection device in sandblasted titanium and the accentuated convex glass. According to Panerai, “the dial with its evocative dégradé effect emulates the shades produced as sunlight filters through the depths of the sea”. Aesthetically, everything feels so right for the space it is in.

Within the case – just 6mm thick – is an extremely accurate and reliable Caliber P.9010, mechanical self-winding movement that offers a three-day power reserve, thanks to the double barrels. The movement powers the hours, minutes, small seconds and the date and is equipped with a quick time adjustment function that can move forward or backward in increments of one hour. It is connected automatically to the date indicator.

Constantly in the search in innovative methodologies to maintain and improve the performance of its instruments, Panerai redefines the concept of a guarantee* by providing 70 years of coverage for the reference Luminor Marina 44mm − Guillaume Néry Edition.

Water-resistant up to 30 bar (about 300 meters deep), the Luminor Marina 44mm − Guillaume Néry Edition is equipped with a strap made from black recycled PET material with white stitching and a trapezoidal pin buckle. For this release, Panerai is also including a white rubber technical strap – the very first to feature luminescent “Officine Panerai” personalization. Each watch comes with a screwdriver to remove the buckle and a recycled plastic box engraved with the signature of Panerai ambassador Guillaume Néry. The caseback includes an engraving depicting the silhouette of the freediver and
Ambassador Guillaume Néry.

4 Reasons Why You Need To Add A Panerai To Your Collection

I often hear things like Panerai watches are too large… they all look the same… they’re overrated…. Why should I buy a Panerai? Now although this is very subjective, let me tell you, a Panerai is more than just a large dialed watch. When you buy a Panerai, you’re essentially buying into that sense of history and tradition.

The inception of the brand dates back to 1860 when Giovanni Panerai opened his first watchmakers shop in Florence, which was also the city’s first watchmaking school – one of the first of its kind for that era. Towards the beginning of the twentieth century, it established itself as a relevant player in the Swiss watch industry and eventually assumed the name Orologeria Svizzera. While the brand was still strong in its precision-instrument game, in 1916 Officine Panerai created the first of its many patents, a radium-based powder that adds ‘next level’ luminosity to the dials of sighting instruments and devices – the Radiomir.  A diving watch using radioactive material – Radiomir, using Rolex movements. However due to it’s hazardous effects, Radiomir was then replaced by Luminor. In 1949 Officine Panerai patented a new self-luminous substance based on Tritium (an isotope of hydrogen). After that, there was just no looking back. From catering to the needs of the Royal Italian Navy to creating almost a cult of its own today, Panerai has come a long way.

Consistency

Aside from general design and finishing, ask a watch enthusiast what he/she looks for a good watch and somewhere on that list will be ‘Consistency’. Be it Consistency in Design… Consistency in Brand Marketing… Consistency in Wearability… And this is exactly where Panerai shines. Although the brand is Swiss-Made, it has always been true to its Italian roots. When you look back to the first Radiomir’s Ref. 3646 (1936) that was introduced for the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command of the Royal Italian Navy, with that large 47mm, cushion-shaped steel case, luminescent numerals and indices, wire lugs welded to the case, a hand-wound mechanical movement (supplied & signed by Rolex), and a water-resistant strap long enough to be worn over a diving suit and compare it to the new Radiomir California PAM 0039, you’ll know exactly what I mean when I say Consistency. The brand has retained its identity with elements like a Plexiglas crystal just like the original watch amongst other details of course.

Aesthetics

Those of you who know me, clearly know my obsession for larger dialed watches. I do have a few 44mm and 47mm Luminor’s on my wish list, but we’ll leave that for another day. But it’s not just about the size of the dial here. Over the years the Luminor’s and Radiomir’s have created an identity of their own. One that has more to do with not just the “not so traditional” size of the case. The answer to that is the Luminor Due that Panerai introduced in 2016. Although the collection is a part of the Luminor family it faced a lot of criticism for not being a ‘Proper’ tool watch – in particular the 30m water-resistance and I get it. But here’s the thing anything above 30m would mean a thicker case and larger diameter, which pretty much defeats the purpose of what Panerai is trying to achieve. The way I look at it is: The Luminor Due is great for someone who likes something a bit more dressy. 38mm (Great for smaller wrists), great everyday wear, slim, well-balanced with just the right proportions, versatile, light-weight, and in terms of wearability – a fit that’s second to none… And most of all… You still have the core design elements of the collection. Frankly, I can’t wait to see what direction Panerai takes with these.

This is the best part. Panerai offers you a variety of straps in different materials and colours to make your PAM, your own, so to say. Whether it’s a NATO, an alligator strap, a calf strap, rubber strap or even the textile straps, Panerai has an array of options to suit every mood and occasion. INTRODUCING: Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa GMT 44mm (PAM 1036)

The Panerai x Luna Rossa collection of timepieces unveiled last year, celebrates Panerai’s role as the official sponsor of the Luna Rossa, the Challenger of Record of the 36th Edition of the America’s Cup. This year, the duo solidifies its partnership once again, with a very special dual timezone watch – Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa GMT – 44 mm (PAM01036).

This special edition adopts the easily identifiable Luminor traits and uses an array of colours that are reminiscent of Luna Rossa in particular the ‘Luna Rossa RED’. The 44mm black DLC coated titanium cushion-shaped case, water resistant to 300m, integrates perfectly with the black DLC coated titanium bezel and the “Ponte Vecchio” calfskin (black with white stitching) strap with a trapezoidal pin buckle in titanium. The arty dark grey sail cloth sandwich structure dial with abstract textures is made using bits from actual sails on the Luna Rossa and is extremely captivating. Also placed around the dial are white luminous arabic numerals and indices. There is a small seconds dial at 9 o clock and a date window at 3 o clock. You also have a red tipped GMT hand. INTRODUCING: Panerai Luminor Marina DMLS 44mm PAM 1662

DMLS or Direct Metal Laser Sintering and Carbotech, is the secret behind Panerai’s newest creation – Luminor Marina DMLS 44mm PAM 1662 – unveiled last week at Watches & Wonders 2020.

What is DMLS? What is Carbotech?

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technology is a futuristic 3D printing process by which titanium powder is melted in tiny amounts by a high power fiber optic laser, layer by layer, i.e, 30 microns (0.03 mm) at a time, until the case takes a solid shape. It is a one of a kind process that allows for the interior of the case to be hollowed out, hence making the watch incredibly light and resilient. On the other hand Carbotech (First introduced by Panerai in 2017) is an alloy that consists of thin layers of carbon fibres superimposed on each other, orientated alternately (a good seven layers per millimeter), fused together under high-pressure temperature-controlled conditions, and finally further consolidated with an advanced polymer. Carbotech is remarkable for its mechanical properties, its lightness and its resistance to stress and corrosion. The entire process involving these materials are obviously a lot more difficult to work on in comparison to say gold or even stainless steel.

Case

Though a whopping 44mm wide, the case wears better than you would expect, with its short lugs giving it a perfect fit on your wrist. DMLS and Carbotech have been used for the bezel, crown and lever of the Safety Lock crown protection bridge. The screwed dodecagonal case back crafted in titanium with black DLC coating, ensures 300m of water resistance.

Dial

Another very compelling aspect is the dial. Everything feels so right for the space it is in. An Anthracite dial with a matte finish compliments the case, and features Arabic numerals and indexes in grey Super-LumiNova with green luminescence. A subsidiary small seconds display occupies the 9 o’clock position. The small seconds counter also features luminous indexes marking 15-second graduations. There’s also a date display at 3 o’clock.

Movement

Yes it’s the outside that is really the highlight here, but the mechanical heart of the Panerai Luminor Marina DMLS 44mm PAM 1662 cannot be ignored. Powering the watch is a self-winding P.9010 Caliber that is just 6 mm thick, entirely designed and developed by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. It is equipped with a rapid time adjustment function that also changes the date and is supported by a 3-day power reserve supplied by a double barrel.

Securing the case is a black Panerai Sportech strap with anthracite stitching. A second technical rubber strap, in black, completes the package, together with a specific screwdriver for its removal and for replacing the buckle.

INTRODUCING: Panerai Luminor Marina ’70th Anniversary’ Collection (PAM 1117, PAM 1118 and PAM 1119)

This year Panerai’s iconic Luminor turns 70 and as part of the celebrations the Florentine watchmaker has unveiled a trio of LUME heavy timepieces with a 70 year guarantee, at the first digital edition of Watches & Wonders 2020 – LUMINOR MARINA – 44 MM PAM1117 DMLS, LUMINOR MARINA CARBOTECH – 44 MM PAM1118 and LUMINOR MARINA FIBRATECH – 44 MM PAM1119.

These Luminors are all about a new grade of Super-LumiNova called ‘X1’, one that Panerai claims is stronger and longer-lasting than other variants and in my opinion, this is hands down one of the most creative and innovative ways of using ‘Lume’. This is an important evolutionary step in a development process concerning the mastery of the emission of light which has been carried out by Panerai since the 1940s.

The trio have a few things in common such as the 44mm Luminor Marina case and the 6mm thick P.9010 calibre that delivers a power reserve of 3 days; a movement entirely conceived and developed by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The LUME in all three watches extend to the lower layer of the sandwich dial, the inner bezel ring, the
crown, the crown-protecting bridge and the lever, and even in the stitching on the strap. To some this might seem a bit much but as a true Paneristi, I think it’s quite refreshing and definitely has a strong wrist presence.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to see these in the metal soon and give you my impressions on how well the extra LUME really lights up the dial in the dark.

A point worth mentioning here is the 70 year Guarantee. Although there has been a lot of debate on this being just a marketing gimmick, because let’s get real, who really needs a 70 year guarantee considering you might not be around for that long, I think it is a brilliant initiative by Panerai. These 270 piece “Boutique Limited Editions” are a tribute to the legacy of the Luminor and I doubt too many collectors would trade them in for newer watches. These are keepers. But then again that’s just how I feel.

Panerai Luminor Marina 44mm PAM1117 DMLS

The new Panerai Luminor Marina 44mm PAM1117 DMLS is as light as 100 grams (including the strap) and is also extremely strong due to the titanium structure which is manufactured by a technology known as Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS). What is the DMLS you ask? DMLS is a process of futuristic 3D printing involving the sedimentation of titanium powder, sintered layer by layer by a high-powered optical fibre laser, 30 microns (0.03 mm) at a time. Coming to the dial – the modern blue sunray finished dial works beautifully as a backdrop to the luminescent Arabic numerals and hour markers. A small seconds counter sits at 9 o’clock while the date window is neatly positioned at 3. Water-resistant to 30 bar (a depth of about 300 metres), the new PAM1117 is fitted with a strap made of Panerai Sportech, woven to give a waterproof rubberised effect, blue with luminous stitching and a Velcro fastener. A second rubber strap, blue with a titanium tongue buckle, is also supplied, together with a tool for changing the strap and a special box with a luminous stylised representation of the dial of the Luminor Marina on its lid.

Panerai Luminor Marina Carbotech 44mm PAM1118

Next we have the Luminor Marina Carbotech 44mm PAM1118. Although I haven’t been able to see this one in the flesh, I have played around with other Panerai Carbotech pieces and I can confidently tell you that this material is unlike anything I’ve ever seen from Panerai. That gorgeous texture on the case is all thanks to Carbotech, an alloy that consists of thin layers of carbon fibres superimposed on each other, orientated alternately (a good seven layers per millimeter), fused together under high-pressure temperature-controlled conditions, and finally further consolidated with an advanced polymer. Carbotech is remarkable for its mechanical properties, its lightness and its resistance to stress and corrosion.

The dial is black with a sunray finish complemented by Arabic numerals and hour markers in green Super-LumiNova with green luminescence. This treatment, has also been applied to the inscriptions “Luminor Marina” and “Panerai”, “Automatic” and the ring around the flange. Inside the watch is a P.9010 calibre that is fitted with the function for rapidly setting the hour hand, which at the same time automatically adjusts the date at 3 o clock. A Panerai Sportech strap, black with luminescent stitching and Velcro fastening completes the package. In addition, owners will also receive a second strap in black rubber with a titanium tongue buckle, together with a tool for changing it and a special box decorated with a luminous image of the Luminor Marina dial on the lid.

Panerai Luminor Marina Fibratech 44mm PAM1119

Completing the collection is the new Panerai Luminor Marina Fibratech 44mm PAM1119. Fibratech is an exciting new discovery by Panerai’s creative hotbed – the Panerai Laboratorio di Idee. It is made from volcanic basalt and mineral fibres that are bound with high-end polymers to become thin layers which are then again superimposed in a precise orientation through a pressure and temperature controlled process. Here Fibratech makes quite a presence on the case, the bezel, the winding crown and the safety lock crown-guard. An anthracite sunray finished dial compliments the case, and features Arabic numerals and hour markers in green Super-LumiNova with green luminescence.

As is traditional, the Luminor Marina Fibratech relies on the mechanical excellence of the calibre P.9010 automatic movement, entirely conceived and developed by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. This is particularly sophisticated because it it is fitted with the function for rapidly adjusting the hour hand, an operation which also changes the date, and it has twin spring barrels providing a power reserve of three days.

Water-resistant to a depth of 30 bar (a depth of about 300 metres), the new Luminor Marina FibratechTM – 44 mm is fitted with a Panerai Sportech strap, black with luminescent sewing and a Velcro fastener. A second strap in black rubber with a titanium tongue buckle completes the equipment, with a special tool for changing it and a personalised box decorated with a luminous image of the iconic Luminor Marina dial on the lid.

Today, unconventional materials are becoming more popular than ever, especially with watch enthusiasts, who are not just looking for something different, but something exclusive. So there’s no reason why Panerai, one of the oldest and most coveted brands in the world, would want to be left behind.

Panerai continues its inexorable evolutionary process of experimentation with a striking new interpretation: the Luminor Marina Carbotech™ – 44 mm (PAM01661). This is an exciting creation in a year which marks the 70th Anniversary of Luminor and the relaunch of the Luminor Marina collection.

At 44mm wide, the new Panerai Luminor Marina Carbotech™ 44MM PAM01661 wears better than you’d expect. The case is made from Carbotech™ and weighs ONLY!! 96 grams. Carbotech™ is both lighter and stronger than ceramic or titanium. It is a bonded carbon material where sheets of carbon fibre are placed on top of one another and bound to form one solid material. As each layer is compressed in a non-uniform pattern, no two cases will ever be the same. The case back is done in titanium with black DLC coating, which allows the watch to achieve water resistance up to 300m.

With vibrant touches of blue and a black Sandwich dial with blue Super-LumiNova markings, Paneristi’s will find this watch takes a lot of its design cues from the LAB-ID™ model introduced in 2017. The palette creates such visual harmony that it becomes undeniably soothing to look at from every angle. Other details include a small seconds counter at 9 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock. What protects the dial is a slightly convex sapphire crystal obtained from corundum.

The aesthetics have done most of the talking here, but the mechanical heart of the P.9010 calibre, entirely designed and developed within the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, cannot be ignored. This is a tested automatic movement just 6mm thick, fitted with the function for rapidly setting the hour hand, a process which simultaneously adjusts the date. It has a power reserve of three days provided by a double spring barrel.

Officine Panerai Slims Down For The Season

Good things come in smaller packages… For a brand that has big, bold and oversized watches as an intrinsic part of their DNA, the idea of adding smaller case sizes to its collection, is quite refreshing. After several years of resisting the increasingly more popular 38mm size, Panerai has jumped on the bandwagon with a new 38mm model of their patented Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic.

Panerai’s long history of producing watches with cases as large as 47mm and no smaller than 45mm, is not hard to decipher.

Starting out as watchmakers for the Royal Italian Navy, and building their reputation on the back of their sturdy watches developed for military use, larger sports watches have been the mainstay of the Panerai collection.

Available in two steel variants and one red gold version, the Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic seems to fit comfortably into its new svelte 38mm case. Unmistakably Panerai in its design, the watch has all the quintessential characteristics that we love about the brand, including the ingenious bridge protecting the crown and Panerai’s unmatched legibility in even the harshest conditions, which is another product of the brand’s rugged history.

The steel versions are available with either a black anthracite dial or a more traditionally Panerai ivory dial. The red gold Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic 38mm has an ivory dial with blue Arabic numeral hour markers and luminescent dot markers.

 

 

The hour markers on the black anthracite dial of the steel Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic 38mm are also luminescent and all three models have a subtle small seconds counter at 9 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock.

 

 

In a further nod to another quickly growing, and relatively novel idea in the world of fine watchmaking, the Panerai Luminor 3 Days Automatic 38mm comes with an easily interchangeable strap.

 

 

While Panerai doesn’t position the Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic 38mm as a women’s watch, and we’re sure they never intended it to be one, the smaller 38mm size and the coloured straps means that women with a taste for slightly unconventional, yet exceptionally good-looking watches, will join the throng of men who prefer a slightly smaller watch rushing out to buy one!
