Who doesn’t like a little bit of Razzmatazz? Especially if it’s in a Day-Date. This year at Watches & Wonders 2021, Rolex continues its horological mastery by bringing together jewellery, watchmaking and colour in the latest Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36. Offered in three gem-set, colourful versions – 18 ct yellow gold with hints of coral (Orange), 18 ct white gold with hints of turquoise and 18 ct Everose gold with hints of Burgundy, these timekeepers bring to life the stunning geometrical effects of how a composition of a round dial can create visual delight.
The 36mm Oyster case of these new timepieces is entirely set with a whopping 254 brilliant-cut diamonds on the lugs, lug caps and case sides. The bezel is encrusted with 52 brilliant-cut diamonds. The dial, paved with 450 diamonds, is host to index hour markers and Roman numerals VI and IX in enamel; these are coral-coloured on the 18 ct yellow gold model, turquoise on the 18 ct white gold version and burgundy on the watch in 18 ct Everose gold. These elegant appliques match the colour of the alligator leather strap for each of the new watches whose 18 ct gold folding Crownclasp is also set with 61 brilliant-cut diamonds. Other details on the dial include: the signature day of the week spelt out in full in an arc-shaped window at 12 o’clock in addition to of course the date window. The crystal covering the dial is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and is fitted with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date.
Under the case beats calibre 3255, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2015 and has been fitted on this model since 2019. It is equipped with Rolex’s latest invention, the Chronergy escapement which according to Rolex gives a 15% energy efficiency. It has great resistance to magnetic fields. Made of nickel-phosphorus, it has great resistance to magnetic fields. Furthermore the movement is fitted with an optimized blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy that makes it up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. The blue Parachrom hairspring is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is fitted on the Rolex-designed and -patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. Calibre 3255 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3255 extends to approximately 70 hours.
Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.

Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master 42 offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display. The 18 ct white gold broad hands and hour markers are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow.
Becoming a whole lot more powerful in 2019, the Yacht-Master 42 runs on the new generation 3235 calibre, which provides a magnanimous 70-hour power reserve. It is also the first time this calibre has been used in a Yacht-Master watch.
The winding crown, fitted with the Triplock triple waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case and is protected by an integral crown guard. The crystal is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and is fitted with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date.
The Oyster bracelet on this new version is equipped with a Rolex-designed and patented Oysterlock folding safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. It also features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, designed and patented by the brand. This inventive toothed mechanism, integrated beneath the clasp, allows fine adjustment of the bracelet length by some 20 mm in increments of approximately 2 mm, without the use of tools. The watch can therefore be worn over a diving suit up to 3 mm thick.
The 2019 FORMULA 1 ROLEX AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX which is also the first race of the season and the 70th Formula 1 championship, kicks off this week at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit. For me personally, and for all Australians, it makes the event extra special that such an incredible brand like Rolex is so closely associated.”
Placement of stones is an art in itself. It requires coordination from the designers (about colours and arrangements of stones) and the case and bracelet engineers (to determine the amount of metal to hold it in place).
