Last year, Seiko unveiled its most advanced Astron GPS Solar watch. The Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time 5X series. Powered by the brands’ most advanced and slimmest GPS Solar caliber, 5X53, this revolutionary timepiece combines the features of GPS and solar power within a single case. Today, the Astron GPS Solar collection includes a wide range of styles, designs and calibers, all of which offer atomic-clock precision and exceptional ease of use.
For 2020, Seiko is expanding its Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time 5X53 series with four new titanium-encased watches. SS063 – Titanium case, titanium bracelet, silvery-white dial, white and silver accents, SSH067 – Titanium case, titanium bracelet, black dial, grey white and black accents, SSH069 – Titanium case and bracelet with super-hard black coating and a matte-finished dial with a unique pattern) and SSH071 – A 2000 piece limited edition with a green dial, green ceramic bezel and gold accents.
With its curved silhouette case, wide case lugs and thin bezel, the design pays homage to the original 1969 Quartz Astron. The two pushers on the right side of the case are now rectangular, giving the case a much smoother profile than more traditional shaped pushers would. Aesthetically, Seiko has tried to keep it as minimal as possible. The bezel no longer has city / UTC codes engraved on it, instead these are now on the outer rim of the dial. Water resistance is rated to 20 bar which is good enough to take you through those rainy days with peace of mind.
Just like its predecessors, the Astron 5X53 series adjusts at the touch of a button to your time zone* by connecting to the GPS satellite network and, as it takes all the energy it needs from light alone, it never needs a battery change and yet delivers the astonishing precision of an atomic clock, one second every 100,000 years. It even connects twice a day to the satellite network; the first connection is made after the dial sensor detects sunlight and the second is made at a time pre-determined and set by the owner. It is the perfect timepiece for the global traveller.
* If there are changes in the region / time zone, manual time zone selection may be required
With its three dimensional dial, bold hands and the sharp lines and distortion-free surfaces, the design is instantly recognisable and the perfection in every detail speaks volumes for the care taken at every stage of the manufacture and for the enduring beauty of the result.
In terms of wearability, the 5X series offers a new buckle mechanism that allows the wearer to make minor adjustments without the need for any link to be added or removed.
Since it made its first appearance in 2012, Astron has proven to be a stunning success worldwide. In its six years of existence, hundreds of thousands of watch lovers and world travellers have found the practical, ‘’real life’’ advantages of Seiko’s GPS Solar technology and the uniqueness of Astron’s design to be an irresistible combination. Over the same period, the range of Seiko’s GPS Solar calibers has advanced and expanded such that Astron now offers Chronograph, Du- al-Time, World-Time and Big-Date versions.
