It’s an understatement to say that Credor is simply a familiar name in the industry. Credor, whose name is derived from the French word “crête d’or” (“crest of gold”) is a sub brand of Seiko and an avenue for the Japanese watchmaker to showcase some of its highest level of artistry and craftsmanship. This year Credor celebrates its 45th anniversary with a very special, limited edition pocket watch, GXBE998.
The watch runs on Caliber 6898, an ultra-thin movement from the historical Caliber 68 series, which dates back to 1969. But the real highlight is the three-dimensional engraving on the caseback. The work here is just breathtaking. Metal engraver and Master Craftsman, Kiyoshi Terui, spent over 100 hours engraving the “Tree of life”. Terui joined Seiko in 1970 and in 2002, received the Award for the most Outstanding Skilled Worker (Contemporary Master Craftsman), the highest honor for a craftsman. In 2007, Terui also received a Medal from the government of Japan for his work.
The tree is given its dimension by a difference in elevation when engraved. This allows for a smooth roundness and depth in its form, and the work is done within a limit of 1.85mm of its case height. On the tree are three motifs with mother-of-pearl inlay… A peony, a lotus and other plants that are a symbol of good fortune… A Pomegranate fruit representing prosperity… and an owl, which in Japan, is a symbol for growing old with joy and good fortune. The owl’s wing is made separately with black mother of pearl, giving the creature even more character, when light is reflected on its wing.
