What a way to end a year dedicated to the iconic Carrera series. TAG Heuer, today unveiled a gorgeous 188-piece limited edition, redesigned vintage Heuer Carrera to mark Jack Heuer’s (Great-grandson of the brand’s founder, former TAG Heuer CEO and current Honorary Chairman) 88th birthday and pay tribute to his visionary contribution to the brand’s 160-year longevity. INTRODUCING – The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Jack Heuer Birthday Gold Limited Edition.
The retro aesthetic of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Jack Heuer Birthday Gold Limited Edition has to be one of the finest examples of nostalgic design language. This watch is inspired by Jack Heuer’s favorite model – the iconic vintage Heuer Carrera 1158CHN in 18K Gold, in addition to of course his love for detail and precision. In the 1970s, Jack Heuer was deeply involved with Formula One and Ferrari and at the time as a gesture of good luck Heuer started a tradition of presenting 18K gold Heuer Carrera’s to Ferrari Formula 1 drivers – legends such as Ronnie Peterson, Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni – during their partnership that ran between 1971 to 1978. Engraved with the driver’s name and blood type on the case back, these Heuer Carrera 1158CHN models have become highly sought-after collector’s items and symbols of the golden age of racing.
“I’m very touched that TAG Heuer reimagined my favourite watch for my birthday. It reminds me of many dear friends and thrilling years on the race track. I will wear it with pride and look forward to seeing it on the wrist of new generations of daring characters as well.”, says Jack Heuer.
While its predecessor was 38mm, this model is sized at a perfect 42mm—made to sit comfortably on the wrist. It is crafted from 18K rose gold – his favourite material and features a silver opaline dial with a duo of applied stylised infinity loops in the centre of the dial, symbolising Jack’s birthday and recalling his infinitely precious legacy to the brand. The overall dial layout stays true to the aesthetics of the original 1158CHN model, with its two sunray brushed chronograph subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock appearing in contrasting black (with rose-gold-coloured polished hands), as a nod to vintage racing timepieces. The silhouette of the redesigned date display and the hands, whose size has been perfectly adjusted to that of the hour-markers, are two subtle details that come straight from Jack’s vision and eye for clean and clear dial design, and they add the final touch to the aesthetic balance of this timepiece.
The round pushers that activate the chronograph are polished to perfection while the lugs are shorter and downwardly angled. Just like the original, the case is finished with a double-domed glass, in this case, made from sapphire crystal and treated with a double antireflective coating.
Fitted with the Calibre Heuer 02 manufacture movement, which is made of 168 components, including a column wheel and a vertical clutch, the watch boasts a magnanimous power reserve of 80 hours. What catches your eye almost immediately is the oscillating mass visible through the case back. It is engraved with Jack Heuer’s motto “Time never stops, why should we?” – expressing his resilient mindset, seemingly boundless energy, and an enduring sense of eternity embodied by the TAG Heuer Carrera collection. Completing the look is a black alligator strap with black lining that bears Jack Heuer’s signature in gold lettering.
This exclusive tribute timepiece will be open for pre-orders from 19 November 2020 and will be available in TAG
Heuer boutiques and online in March 2021.
