In 2013 Chopard launched “The Journey to Sustainable Luxury” project, a commitment to sustainable and ethical practices in partnership. For the initiative, the company teamed up with the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM). Chopard’s support has included committing to purchasing a substantial portion of the cooperative’s gold which is certified as “Fairmined”—and utilizing it in their collections. The gold has been extracted in a responsible manner and the miners receive a fair price for their work along with contribution to training, social well-being and environmental protection.
To guarantee the traceability of the “Fairmined” gold used in-house, Chopard has set up a specific operational protocol in its Geneva workshops, where “Fairmined” gold is never mixed with other gold alloys and even the waste is dealt with separately.
This year Chopard, continues its journey to sustainable luxury with the introduction of the new L.U.C XPS Twist QF Fairmined Gold watch officially certified by the watch industry’s most demanding certification protocol – The Fleurier Quality Foundation label.
Ultra-thin, edgy and sharp, in this case, less is definitely more. The slate grey color dial with a stamped sunburst texture (inspired by the raw composition of gold nuggets extracted from mines) stands out perfectly against the satin-brushed rose gold case. The crown and small seconds sub dial are off-centered to give the watch that asymmetric appeal. With a 7.20mm case, Chopard’s definitely not interested in the ‘race to the thinnest’ but more with ‘thin with a purpose’.
Certified Haute Horlogerie
Produced in a 250-piece limited series, the L.U.C XPS Twist QF Fairmined is equipped with a self-winding movement: L.U.C Calibre 96.09-L equipped with two barrels (Twin® technology), wound by a 22-carat gold micro-rotor in 22-carat gold ensuring a comfortable 65-hour power reserve. Its precision is tested by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), which awards the watch the sought-after chronometer title.
Reliability is then tested by the Chronofiable protocol which involves three weeks of “ageing tests” during which the watch is subjected to heat, cold and damp, repeated pull and push forces on the winding-stem, magnetic fields and repeated shocks.
The Final Touch
The L.U.C XPS Twist QF Fairmined Gold sits beautifully on the wrist thanks to its elongated lugs. The hand-sewn alligator leather strap dyed with plant-based pigments – in matt black for the main part and cognac-colored for the lining completes the look.
