Watches & Wonders 2021: Baume & Mercier Riviera and Baumatic Riviera

by Hours and Minutes Australia

At a time when small gold watches were considered the height of luxury and the demand for more modern looking timepieces was growing, Baume & Mercier was one of the first brands to unveil a watch that was centred around the culture of leisure, the spirit of independence, and the desire for modernity. It was the Riviera. The Riviera first made its debut in 1973 and just like its name suggests was inspired by the carefree lifestyle of the French Riviera. The signature twelve-sided bezel reflecting the twelve hours displayed on its dial, left quite an impression on the watch community, and today approx. 10 years after being discontinued the watch is still one of the most easily identifiable timepieces out there.

This year, Baume & Mercier is bringing the much loved Riviera back in 3 sizes -each in steel with diameters of 36mm, 42mm and 43mm. Overall, you’ll find that the shape of the original 1973 watch is still present, but it has been updated to today’s times – striking the perfect balance between its roots in avant-garde ‘70s design and the sport-minded classicism of today’s watches. It’s also an excellent choice for those who are looking for versatility, but with finesse.

Let’s start with the 42mm Riviera. This watch features the collections’ signature dodecagonal – twelve-sided – bezel, that is slightly more rounded / curved in comparison to its predecessors. The case has dedicated contouring on its sides that allows it to sit quite comfortably on any wrist. Wearers have the option of a blue, black or silver dial. Each model has the classic hour and minute functions, as well as a sleek date display. The brand’s obsession with the concept of visual flow is further exemplified by either a blue interchangeable rubber strap for a “full blue” version or a steel bracelet.

The 36mm Riviera on the other hand is a watch that, in the words of Baume & Mercier, “addresses active, independent women with assertive personalities”. It is powered by a Swiss Made quartz movement. The steel version is adorned with an azure blue or silver dial, while its rubber strap version features a black dial. A self-winding version equipped with a tried-and-true Swiss Made movement is also available as part of this refined line; and like the entire collection, it is water-resistant to 50 meters.

And last but by no means the least – The 43mm steel BAUMATIC Riviera, that is hands down the Hours and Minutes fraternity favourite. It is equipped with an in-house movement, Baumatic Calibre, which is nothing short of a triumph. The calibre is self-winding and delivers a five-day power reserve, a daily precision of -4 s / +6 s, and a magnetic resistance of 1500 Gauss, which provides solid protection against magnetic fields on an everyday basis.

The contemporary, stylised watch comes with a smoky blue decorated sapphire dial on a built-in steel strap, or with a smoky gray decorated sapphire dial on a supple black strap. The transparency of its opaque dials provides an opportunity to admire the moving gear trains of the BAUMATIC, as if time had no hold over this watch.
